Review of Norwegian Wood (2010) by Ralph T — 11 Sep 2011
Pretty Japanese love story, in a wood.
This is a pretty, arty, dreamy like reminiscent love memory of a Japanese man. The film is thus a play of his memory on film, amidst 1960's Tokyo and student rioting. Toru, the main lead, befriends and falls in love with his dead friends girlfriend. It is based on a best selling book and suffers from comparisons and high expectations.
The film is slow, at times ill paced and relies on the dreamy cinematography, which is arguably the star and focus for this love based drama. Yes it is beautiful, but it feels a little artificial, missing the connection and lacks the powerful emotion and feeling a love story needs, leaving you at arms length. All this for me makes the film better than average but more exciting as a visual prospect than the well billed offering of a genuine love story it so needed to be.
