Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Daryl L — 11 Aug 2013
Contrasy and saturated, movies of the good 'ol 50s. "North by Northwest" is never an exception. Throughout the film you'll find a man, described as handsome and charming, in juxtaposition with characters in the middle of the screen. He always runs around and is chased by "men" - not for his looks obviously, but for his name (mistakenly) George Kaplan. He meets a lady of pure lust and beauty, Eva Kendall who he eventually falls in love with.
In all honesty, I agree this is one of Hitchcock's best movies (if not, the best) in color and has become a favorite of mine since "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "Rear Window". Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint gave an exceptional acting and chemistry mixed with a plot both suspenseful and imaginative. The airport scenes remind me of Scorsese and Bian De Palma gangster movies, and a little of "Before Sunrise" for the meeting of Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint for the first time in the train - I wonder how many generations of talented filmmakers Hitchcock has influenced with his works.
