Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Marc B — 21 Dec 2016
This is three movies for the price of one, and not entirely in a good way. We have the present, populated by cold hateful rich miserable people; we have the inhabited story that springs from the pages of a novel written by one of the protagonists and read by the other; and we have the flashbacks of their past relationship, which sort of informs the book, and definitely influences the unfolding of the present tense, and I do mean tense.
I admired this script and the look of the film, and the performances were just fine. I didn't love much about it, though.
