Review of Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press (2017) by Peter H — 23 Jun 2017
So I just finished this movie. I have to say that the underlying attitude of the press in the film is shocking. The film laments the terrible state of our society's free press in the form of feeling that they should somehow not be held accountable for their reporting.
That the laws that protect them and provide them a stable legal environment shouldn't also provide the press's victims with some legal protections as well. The film covers Gawker being sued by Hulk Hogan because they released a sex tape invoking Hogan claiming the pornographic and highly private video somehow constitutes news.
It delves into the mean spirited nature of Gawker who reveled in its mean spiritedness and then says "oh woe is me, our victims are fighting back, this is so unfair". Literally, that was their point.
.. victims of their mean spiritedness shouldn't be allowed to work together to punish them within the bounds of the law! Then the film takes this bizarre turn into how unfair it is that a guy with money could buy a newspaper! Then on to their contentious relationship with Trump.
.. all the while talking from this perspective that the press deserves respect, deserves answers to their questions... like the president, or anyone for that matter, owes them anything. All in all, it was a movie by a self righteous press for a self righteous press, to sing the press's praises and to elevate their own importance in their own minds to others inside its own echo.
