Review of No Such Thing (2002) by Johnny R — 29 Dec 2007
Hal Hartley doesn't make "normal" movies, and this is his least "normal" by a long way. A twisted modern-day spin on the Beauty And The Beast fable in which Sarah Polley is, as ever, excellent as "Beauty" and Robert John Burke is unforgettable as a grumpy, world-weary, alcoholic "Beast".
As ever with Hartley there's metaphor aplenty, so there's so much more to the film than a mere quirky oddity, should you wish there to be... Brilliant stuff!
