Review of No Such Thing (2002) by Mark M — 20 Aug 2011
I had seen this shortly after it was originally released on DVD and it was completely lost on me: I'm not sure if I was expecting something super-serious or if I was meant to suspend my disbelief. On watching it a second time, however, I realise a) it was tagged a comedy on TiVo and b) that this HAS to be taken with suspension of disbelief.
There is most certainly a comedic overtone here, despite some pretty serious social commentary on media manipulation (you can't go wrong with Helen Mirren, period), paranoid fear of the unknown (plane crashes, terrorism, "monsters"), and gender roles/ feminism in fairy tales.
It can be a little slow if you like your movies to blow up in your face or to have sex in your lap; otherwise, it's a pretty fun ride.
