Review of No Escape (2015) by Tony Z — 31 Jul 2017
No Escape is a good, albeit forgettable thriller. It's set during a political upheaval that leaves madmen in charge who are particularly hostile towards foreigners.
I don't know how it became popular to consider this movie racist, but that thought certainly never crossed my mind. The Asian gangs were violent, but there are also many civilians acting very scared as well as others willing to help the desperate family. You could have an identical plot in South America, Africa, Eastern Europe or the Middle East. In fact, with a bit more world building you could do it in the US.
It's sad that individuals are so focused on race that they don't see the bad guys as anything more than Asian.
