Review of Ninja Assassin (2009) by Tero H — 30 Dec 2012
Here is a list of pluses and minuses:
+ lots of stylish action.
- too much like watching an animated comic book, some of the action is too stylized.
- the action is not believable, such as people withstanding incredible wounds, bullet hits etc.
+ there are more than enough fights for a film of this duration.
+ There is a variety of martial arts weapons used which is nice to see in a film.
+ The action is choreographed in a cool way,.
- but I don't think human body has that much blood?
+ using inventiveness, this film exploits ninja stories like healing powers, weapon styles, incredible acrobatics and invisibility in a clever - although comic-book - way.
Despite some weaknesses, mostly due to the visual comic book style and being not believable, this movie is among the better fictionary/fantasy martial arts movies I have seen lately.
Theres enough action to keep you interested and enough fights for a martial arts movie. However, it stumbles on its own unbelievability. Still, a better-than-normal martial arts film. The ending with the soldiers riding the ninja-hq looked a bit like the ending of American Ninja. This japanese legend of Ninjutsu, so cleverly taken advantage of here, is a rare treat these days: more films like this would be nice although they should use a bit less of that 'old red paint'.
