Review of Nil by Mouth (1997) by Jake R — 03 May 2007
Ray Winstone playing a violent alcoholic South London wife-beater is not exactly braking casting conventions, but who cares when such a decision makes for electrifying viewing? This hard-as-nails drama showcases some brilliant naturalistic acting, but the film belongs to Winstone and his horrificly isolated wife, Val, played by Kathy Bates.
It's a routine all too familiar with the everyday working-class: a life of strict rules that bend and sway in favour of an abusive husband. Whilst there are no morals to justify, or even condemn, such action, it still has a raw and edgy power that perhaps can subverse the opinions of some very guilt-ridden viewers.
Gary Oldman is a wonderful director who certainly knows his material, just if it's the kind we want to see, or admit to doing, that is the tougher goal.
