Review of Nightwatching (2007) by Red L — 12 Apr 2010
It looks like an amazing film with a super history lesson built in but...Confusing, weird and unpleasant, these are just some of the words which come to mind after watching/trying to watch this awful, awful film.
I picked it up because I had just seen an exhibit of Rembrandt's work and was totally fascinated by the man's ability to draw. The film's one redeeming quality is that each scene is staged as a Rembrandt painting, using the same angles and light, which is quite brilliant.
Occasionally small snippets of information are thrown in (for example him joking about painting the muskets in his paintings upside down so the Spaniards wouldn't know how to load them). Ultimately the crying babies and sound of marching feet drown out the dialogue, the editing is so choppy you feel disoriented, the music is awful, awful, awful and something apparently got lost in the translation.
Give it a miss. The Wikipedia version of Rembrandt is much less confusing.
