Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Michael A Elkana F — 07 Jan 2010
By far my favorite from Fellini. A remarkable character study that emphasizes the life of a prostitute. A journey of Cabiria, looking for her true love. At one time it amuses you with its cynical view of world, but at the end it's also emotionally heartbreaking.
Giuletta Masina was definitely one of the greatest actress ever. What makes this interesting isn't just about Cabiria, it's the depiction of life after war in Rome, seeing society, from the highest to the lowest (ppl lived in caves).
The tough life of Cabiria herself and every people she encountered along her way remind us that life's indeed no fairy tale, and we have to go through it, just like what Cabiria chooses after she's being dumped just for money.
A masterpiece of neorealism.
