Review of Nightbreed (1990) by Gray P — 06 Aug 2010
Why doesn't Clive Barker direct more films? I always enjoy them: the original Hellraiser, Lord of Illusions, and Nightbreed are all awesome. Based on his equally good novel, Cabal, and featuring body horror auteur David Cronenberg as a super creepy serial killer, Nightbreed is an enthralling blend of monstrous body horror, psychological introspection, gore, eroticism, and Lovecraftian mythology that should not disappoint any fan of real horror.
Nightbreed may feel a little dated now, but it is still brutal and original with loads of twised fun. It concerns a group of monstrous people, the Nightbreed, who live underneath a rural graveyard and are connected to an ancient god-figure.
Throughout history, the Nightbreed have not been tolerated by humanity and have hence always struggled for their very existence. Into this situation walks Boone who may be their new messiah or who may just be a psychotic serial killer.
Surreal and nightmarish, Nightbreed is a haunting and unforgettable piece of horror cinema.
