Review of New York, New York (1977) by Cli O — 03 Dec 2008
I'm being generous. I watched both the long and short version. The long version is WAY too long, but I love the 'Happy Endings' scene. The short version has a couple of small differences and they cut almost the entire 'Happy Endings' scene (what were they thinking?).
Thought the opening scene would be much shorter, but it's also too long. Both versions move very slowly. There is something off about this film. I think it's De Niro. Something about his acting irritated the crap out of me.
It's like his acting for the 40's is too 'Robert De Niroish'. Liza Minelli is EXCELLENT. Why didn't she receive an Academy Award nomination? Love the song 'The World Goes Round'; love the way it was shot (the vocal was performed live and recorded at the same time) She should have received an Oscar nomination just for that.
Also like the song she sang in the recording booth where she's copying someone else's voice. And 'New York, New York' belongs to Liza not Sinatra.
