Review of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010) by Adrian Z — 30 Sep 2014
Remarkable, if not definitive 4-hour long documentary about the making of The Nightmare On Elm Street film series, is filled with insightful anecdotes from key players, some of whom candidly talk about the various difficulties - technical and human - experienced in making these films, along with sober assessments of each film's strengths and weaknesses.
Talking head shots alternate with ample stock footage, and some clever stop motion animation to bookend each segment. Sadly, Johnny Depp and Patricia Arquette are the only significant players who happen to be absent.
Poignantly concludes with a segment called The House That Freddy Built, highlighting the efforts of Bob Shaye in founding independent studio New Line Cinema, which over time, thanks to Freddy's success, became the major studio that went on to produce colossal productions such as The Lord Of The Rings films.
