Review of Network (1976) by Shaun B — 31 Jul 2012
"I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!".
An endlessly quotable movie that is a fantastic satire and damning statement on corporate influence over journalism which is rightly referred to today as "media." It is entertainment and pulp. It can be bland and tasteless so as not to offend or it can be outrageous and foul; it does not matter so long as it brings in the ratings. I'm sure Rupert Murdoch found a way to distort the message of this movie to his own good as he turned FOX from a shithouse into a force to be reckoned with in the media. It's all become sensationalized and it's all bullshit. This movie points it out well and in an entertaining fashion. Would be perfect if not for the delving into a love affair side story that takes over most of the second half as we deal with kiddie gloves the ethics involved in exploitation and giving the public what it wants. Required viewing for just about anyone.
