Review of Network (1976) by Craig T — 11 Mar 2011
This film came out in 1976 among two of the best films ever made: Taxi Driver and Rocky. I indulged in these two films from an early age and agree with most critics on them universally. However, Network slipped by me until recently. I almost held a grudge against it since DeNiro was passed over for Peter Finch that year at the Oscars. Network was critically hailed and Fay Dunaway won Best Actress and deserved every bit of it. Once I finally sat through this wild ride about a dysfunctional news station, I learned much about grudges and of the director, Sidney Lumet's talent.
When an aging anchor breaks down on live television it starts a chain reaction of ratings vs standards and all the lines that will be crossed in the battles that ensues. As soon as one event leads to the reaction, that starts another fire and another opportunity to capitalize on it. The writing is absolute genius and Patty Chayefsky, the man responsible, truly gave us a one of a kind story.
Network is brilliantly written, expertly shot, and contains captivating performances. I see why Finch received Best Actor. He embodied a man crumbling and did so with scary precision. Although not my pick for Best Actor that year, he definitely earned the nomination. This film was everything I was NOT expecting and all my preconceived notions were smashed. One of my all time favorite actresses, Fay Dunaway shines like the shooting star in one of her finest performances. Her obsession and ability demand attention is a feat to behold. What the entire cast did here (including Duvall, Holden and Beatty) was so exciting and unpredictable that I literally sat up in disbelief almost a dozen times. Sidney Lumet seized the day. He took a chance on a film project and succeeded like all the great ones that have come before and after him. I will always hold Network with high regards and look forward to seeing it again soon. It demands a second viewing and will be obliged with no resistance. (A+).
