Review of Network (1976) by Jared H — 29 Mar 2012
I'm bumping this movie up to a full 5 stars. I think this just might be the single greatest screenplay ever written. It really is perfect. Never before have I been so in awe of a screenwriter's work. Chayefsky is a ridiculous beast.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie that gives so much insight (and foresight) into the world of television, and the effects that it has on American (and therefore, global) society. "Network" is masterfully written, drifting into and out of both satire and realism quite flawlessly. Released in 1976, it seems to have, in many ways, predicted the future of American television and culture. It's probably twice more relevant today than it was when it was made. I'm honestly shocked that none of my professors had us watch it in any of my film or television classes. Great, sharp performances all around, and some biting and memorable monologues that really make you think about the state of the world. Fantastic stuff.
