Review of Neds (2007) by Luke T — 06 Feb 2011
A gritty depiction of 1970's Glasgow gang culture from director Peter Mullen.
We follow the rise and (not quite) fall of promising student John McGill. Living in the shadow of his delinquent older brother, Benny, and his abusive, alcoholic father, John aspires to achieve at school with the aim of moving on to university. However, the predictable happens and John inevitably mixes in with the wrong crowds and follows his brothers lead in becoming one of the most feared members of the gangs of Glasgow.
The disappointing thing about this otherwise excellent effort was the lack of a defined conclusion. We neither gain a sense of remorse nor an image of the subject having fallen so far from his aspirations that it leaves a lasting impression.
Well worth a watch, but not one to add to your DVD collection upon release.
One word to sum it up - Edgy.
