Review of 3 Idiots (2009) by Luke T — 27 Sep 2016
At the time of this release, this was India's biggest grossing film of all time and I can understand why. It is one of the funniest movies to be made in Bollywood and certainly the funniest Bollywood film to have been made in the year of this release.
Directed by Raju Hirani, the film tells the tale of three university buddies, one of whom falls in love with the Dean's daughter. Aamir Khan as Rancho, R.Madhavan as Farhan Queshi and Sharman Joshi as Raju all give very good performances in their roles as the buddies who deal with a forgotten bet, attend a wedding that they are forced to crash and also have to deal with a funeral that is going badly wrong.
There is a really good performance to be had from Kareena Kapoor in her role as Pia, a medical student who Rancho falls in love with and she suits the role very well.
The direction from Hirani is excellent as he keeps a good pace going from start to finish, while the script is written superbly by the director, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidnu Vinod Chopra (who also produced) as there are really funny moments to be had and the soundtrack is good, with the song Zoobi Doobi standing out best.
This film swept the board come awards season in India as it won a total of 16 International Indian Film Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Actress (Kapoor), Supporting Actor (Joshi), screenplay, cinematography, editing and sound.
The film also won 6 Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Director and Supporting Actor, while also winning 2 Star Guild Awards and 3 National Film Awards.
Perhaps the only criticism I would give the film is that it runs for too long, but nevertheless it is still a very enjoyable and really funny film from Bollywood.
