Review of Near Dark (1987) by Mjs M — 08 Aug 2009
Another Kathryn Bigelow movie that I?m catching up on to pretend I?m an expert come hurt Locker. Anyway, this one holds up a bit better than Point Break. Basically this was a hybrid of vampire movie, western, and biker movie, it frames vampires outside of the wealthy trappings of European castles and Louisiana Mansions and places it in an area of the Southwest reminiscent of Raising Arizona and My Name is Earl.
That?s a cool idea and there are some pretty awesome scenes here. However it is marred by three pretty big flaws: it takes a good half hour to finally get going (a third of the running time), its budget is a lot smaller than it should have been, and it has a dumb happy ending which feels tacked on.
Still, I?d say its passable.
