Review of Near Dark (1987) by Lord N — 24 Jul 2010
What you do to get a good idea of what this film is about if you haven't seen it is you take the story of Twilight, you take out all of the stupid mushy stuff and the ridiculous elements such as the sparkling vampires, you flip a few things around, and you make it much darker, and you have the general plot of this film. I liked this one. this is a REAL vampire movie. It wasn't perfect. I felt that the events of the movie were missing something. I'm not really sure what though. I will say that this movie was an Aliens reunion. I mean, you had Janette Goldstein, Lance Henrikson, and Bill Paxton. I liked the acting, the plot was really good, the screenplay was decent, it was all around a really enjoyable film. I would suggest it if you haven't seen it.
TRIVIA TIME: 1. In the scene where Severen and Jesse torch the motor home, Severen asks Jesse if he had remembered about a "fire that they had started in Chicago". It refers to the great fire in the Midwest/Chicago in 1871 that left more than 100,000 people homeless and destroyed businesses. The fire still remains a mystery to this day.
2. While shooting in the desert, Lance Henriksen relieved the boredom between takes by hopping in his car and taking short drives through the desert, still in costume and often staying in character. According to Henriksen and Bill Paxton, the two were stopped by a policeman who became so unnerved questioning Jesse about his speeding that the officer became visibly uncomfortable, stepping back and placing his hand on his firearm. The obviously flustered officer decided to send them on their way rather than write them a ticket.
