Review of Nashville (1975) by Brian S — 22 May 2011
Another Robert Altman film, another 2 1/2 hours of me being bored and confused. I think what disappointed me most about this film was how distant it was. it had a very "fly on the wall" feel that only showed vague glimpses of characters' depth and personalities.
unlike other films where characters are just plain flat and undeveloped, I felt like any one of these people would make fascinating characters if the story ever bothered to focus on them. a lot of the dialogue can get irritating at times, too--people constantly talking over each other and/or saying virtually nothing of interest or importance.
what I understood, though, I enjoyed. the timeframe, the setting, the overall setup and interconnectedness of everything, the shades of humour, even some of the music. in the end, however, I really didn't care.
I didn't have enough invested in any character, storyline, or overriding theme.
