Review of Mysterious Skin (2005) by Matty S — 09 Jan 2014
Gregg Araki's one magnificent turn as a serious filmmaker. This is one of the very few times I've seen an adaptation of a book surpass its source material. And, Scott Heim's book was amazing.
However, Araki's film is even better. This is a brutal study of the open wounds left behind by childhood sexual abuse. The performances by all actors are exceptional, but it is the star turn by Joseph Gordon-Levitt which will forever sear into your brain.
This is a rough but important film. Gritty and realistic, despite the horrors -- Araki and Heim manage to find a bit of hope. Unforgettable and a highly under appreciated cinematic work.
