It harkens back to the 50's - 80's when cartoon movies had a message to send to children about friendship and supporting one another while using actual references from the 80's and 90's to keep us adults entertained.

Imagine The Black Cauldron, but with fantasy style fun, a sense of realism, with a lot of The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, and The Roadrunner spread over the dark overtones.
