Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Susan P — 24 Aug 2008
(beware: possible spoilers...) This was a fascinating documentary that not only raises interesting questions about the definition of quality in modern abstract art, but also tries to get to the heart of a probably unanswerable question: Did Marla really paint all those pictures by herself? The mother seems very honest; the father struck me as shifty (but he could just be nervous).
It is hard to believe they would lie about it, but there is a definite lack of evidence to prove that Marla is the sole artist. The paintings she did on camera simply do not look like the other ones and I cannot understand, given her presumed output, why it would be so difficult to get at least *some* kind of footage.
I mean, she's a four-year-old, not Bigfoot! At any rate, I do hope that Marla herself will be able to remain untouched by all this palaver.
