Review of My Kid Could Paint That (2007) by Brad M — 10 Nov 2009
I'm really enjoying this trend in documentaries to present the viewer with the information, and then leave them to make their own decisions. there is no heavy-handed narrator telling you what to think.
I found the interviews about modern art to be more interesting than the family stuff, because I don't really care if that girl painted those or not; I didn't buy one. the most important point, I think, was this: "People think that art owes them an explanation.
.." I couldn't be exact about the rest, but basically, when they don't get the explanation, they get angry and start to accuse the artist or the style of being shit. or they think the artist is saying something like, "i'm smart and you're dumb because you don't get it.
" but that's all the beholder; the artist said no such thing. so, you may not like (or understand) modern or abstract art, but some people do, and those people may very well make a distinction between "like" and "understand.
".
