Review of My Girl 2 (1994) by Mark H — 23 Jul 2009
There's being a kid. There's being an adult. And then there's that year in between.
Did this really need to be made? Don't get me wrong, I love it. But it is no way near the standard of the first movie.
I question whether this is a story about the search of information about her mother or the tale of a young girl growing up and finding herself - Which I think makes this movie so relatable.
After a school project is set to research someone you admire, but have never met, our young Vada chooses to write about her mother. But realising she knows very little, she jets off to LA, to spend a few days with her uncle Phil, his girlfriend Rose and her son, Nick.
Nick is assigned to chaperone Vada round and aid in the search for her mother's past. Along the way we meet several people, each as odd as the next, but all lead to the one person that will help Vada write her assignment.
Anna Chlumsky who plays Vada is still the best little actress; Witty and sarcastic but so cute. Which the same can be said for Austin O'Brien who played Nick.
Although you have two big names - Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis in this movie, they really take a back seat, which is good as it allows Richard Masur (Uncle Phil) and Christine Ebersole (Rose) to have bigger roles in this feel good film.
Rose: I don't suppose your father gave you permission to pierce your ears?
Vada: Not exactly.
Rose: Well, just don't shave your legs. Your father will never let you visit us again if I send you back hairless and full of holes.
I recommend it to anyone who wants a sweet tale. But believe me - It can't be compared to My Girl.
