Review of My Dog Skip (2000) by Tim D — 20 Oct 2010
This movie is one of the best light dramas I have ever seen. The story revolves around a young boy in 'small town USA', who is out of place and out of friends in his samll town. His father, a dominating brooding war veterane, dispite the feelings of wife and only son believes that when the dog eventually dies his son will be destoryed by it. The boys mother on the other hand can see that it might just be the thing that is needed to bring him out of his shell. So on his birthday she, unbeknowenst to her husband, buys a small puppy. The stage is now set for a journey that will change not only both of them but also the audience as well.
The small dog and the boy grow together, with the dog displaying all the best qualities of the canine species he teaches the boy some valuable lessons about life. This movie will teach some valuable lessons to kids and may just remind some adults about them as well. But don't be fooled this movie is NEVER preechy, the story just gently touches on some subjects our society struggles with even today.
If you have ever loved and lost a dog be warned - this is a tear jerker. I can't watch this movie in company, I have loved and lost two very special dogs myself and cry like a baby at the endding every time. Animal lovers and younger children may find some of the scenes disturbing but trust me the journey is worth the price. Solidly recommended for ages 10 - 110.
