Review of My Bloody Valentine (2009) by David L — 02 Jun 2012
The 3D element is certainly the original selling point of this film, but come the end of the movie I felt that even that could have been used to a more scarier degree. There's no real loss from just watching the standard 2d version.
Nevertheless I enjoyed this twist on your average movie, the death scenes were often comically gory, but became a little repetitive which is the problem when the masked killer is attributed a trademark weapon! There's only so many times someone can be stabbed through the eye with a pickaxe before it becomes a little monotonous (albeit good for the 3D element).
We could have benefitted from a longer introduction as it wasn't visually explained how the mining saga was initially instigated and instead we just jumped into the events one year on. At the other end of the scale, the conclusion doesn't really have a traditional twist at the end either, and you'll probably walk away thinking that it was quite predictable.
The main body was your usual dosage of blood and guts though and did include interesting interpersonal relationships which evolved throughout the story! It has been left open for a sequel, but there would need to be a lot more originality of ideas if a second instalment were to be justified!
