Review of Coffin Baby (2013) by Vincent P — 26 Aug 2015
Toolbox Murders 2: a (very) rough cut someone incredibly stupid deemed a finished product. Little more than a demo reel for the Jones' FX shop, much like a demo reel, there's no real narrative structure. Well, there is a structure; it goes like this: scene of torture, intertitle letting us know precisely what day of torture the captive main character is on, scene of torture, intertitle, lather, rinse, repeat. Maybe the odd flashback here and there with no context provided just to confuzzle things further. 1/2 star.
Coffin Baby: at least watchable? The chronological edit and newly shot footage fix the Toolbox Murders 2 cut as best it likely can be (even if that newly shot footage leads to some idiosyncrasies like Brian Krause's haircut changing from scene to scene and corpses magically disappearing and reappearing in the frame). A new incestuous menage-a-trois subplot leads to a pretty good twist at the end AND there's actually an ending... in that it doesn't simply stop (as in the original cut). It's still a mess, but a more organized mess. 2 stars? Maybe a little generous but they tried to right their wrongs.
