Review of My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) by Arif S — 05 Apr 2008
The fact that they dared to make this movie in the 1980s is what probably stood out the most. Just the amazing casualness of the way that they tackled the whole elements of minorities and homosexuality and the fact that they didn't treat it like it was such a big deal.
The fact that it was just a normal aspect to them like any other aspect is to a human being. The bare humanity, the grittyness of this movie, is what made it enjoyable. As a whole, however, I didn't really find that all too much stood out.
Daniel Day Lewis was fantastic, and a lot of the supporting cast was very good, but I thought that some of the things they put in were a little unneccessary and I don't really feel as if there was that much of a climax.
As a statement, I really appreciate it, and I'm really happy that it was made (The message this movie gives you is actually very important) However, as a whole, it doesn't stand out to me all too much.
I mean I definitely liked it, but it's not the most amazing thing I've seen.
