Review of My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) by Jeff B — 08 Oct 2009
Excellent film by Stephen Frears with an excellent early performance by Daniel Day Lewis. But of course, it wasn't just him that made the film, the rest of the cast was excellent as well. I didn't really know what this movie was about prior to seeing it, and to be honest, if I was to describe this to anyone now that I've seen it, I don't really know how I could sum it up. Not that that's a bad thing.
This is a film about different groups and cultures and people trying to just fit in and just keep living the way they want to. I love that the homosexuality subject is barely touched on, like it's not that important. I think my favorite part in the film is when Omar's father is at the laudrette and talks to Daniel Day Lewis.
Overall it's a very good movie that has a lot to say without preaching.
