Review of Muscle Shoals (2013) by Aaron G — 18 Nov 2013
I am enjoying the recent release of music documentaries and concert films. Pearl Jam, Green Day, Rodriquez, U2, Journey and now we can add Muscle Shoals. This small town in Alabama has been a recording stop from the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bobby Wolmack, Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger and countless others. At nearly two hours, I was totally engaged on how one man's vision spawned off a deep, funky sound that made his studio and bandmates the most sought out in the music business for many years.
Interviews with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, The Queen of Soul (Franklin), Etta James (before her passing) Bono from U2 and candid interviews with the men that made it all possible. Muscle Shoals will have you tapping your feet, clinching your fist at perfection and providing some insight some of music's best known material. Seeing this film only makes me hope that someone will make a Stax Records based film on their rich history, maybe this film will push it out in the coming years.
Music you thought could only be produced in Michigan, New York or L.A. came from Muscle Shoals. This is a must for music fans-fanatics (like myself) and light listeners alike.
