Review of Murmur of the Heart (1971) by Matthew C — 31 Oct 2007
An excellent look into the sexuality of another time and place. The bohemian bourgeoisie family in this movie is instantly lovable, and the film is whimsical in that Royal Tannenbaum's (if anything in English could compare) sort of way.
A highly influential film as well, after watching this I was able to point to many movies and styles of directing it has undoubtedly influenced. Wes Anderson perhaps being one. Unfortunately like a good word in another language this movie is somewhat 'untranslatable', I know many people who would be offended and confused by this sort of movie but screw them anyway.
Live it up, right? Fortunately my time spent in New Orleans allowed me to appreciate the free spirit that is permissible in some cultures and eras. Though I would normally categorically denounce incest, the scene in this movie that depicts it does it in a way that I am left questioning my own views on sexuality.
Fucking Bravo.
