Review of Murmur of the Heart (1971) by Flike S — 18 Oct 2008
Some hide their deepest thoughts while others exploit them. During this time period, Malle has explained that he was working on an adaptation of "Ma Mere", another story of incest, but after a month of writing could not directly connect to the subject matter. He put the book down, wrote an eighty page treatment and had "Le Souffle au Coeur".
As in 1958, "Les Amants" caused a bit of controversy, and this along with much of Malle's work seemed to follow suit. What we see, is a tender coming of age story, with a bit of a canted path from the standard "growing up" scenario, all while holding on an extremely sincere and unique voice.
