Review of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) by Laura H — 15 Mar 2018
Branagh's adaptation works in flashes-like the particularly flashy camera work, utilizing the cramped space of the train to imagine striking camera movement-but strange structural decisions derail the better ideas.
Why leave the train? Why begin with a different mystery? Most egregiously, why shift into standard thriller/action mode? Whodunits work best when the author or director show some respect for their audience's intelligence-and they fail, as this one does, when they try to placate the audience, treating viewers as if they were goldfish who can't hold their attention.
