Review of Murder, My Sweet (1944) by Rick R — 11 Feb 2009
"Murder My Sweet" (1944).
This simple little film noir is one of my favorite detective movies. This time William Powell plays the smart-talking detective, Phillip Marlowe, hired by big Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki). Moose has got out of prison and has some money saved up and wants Marlowe to find his nightclub singer girlfriend, Velma Valente. The trouble is, that Velma seems to have dropped off the face of the planet.
Add to this is Ann Grayle (Ann Shirley) who hires Marlowe to help recover a stolen jade necklace for her step-mom, Helen Grayle (played by femme fatal Claire Trevor). Unfortunately, it's all involved with some shady characters.
This Raymond Chandler novel was directed by film noir legend Edward Dmytryk and has a great psychedelic drug montage that, all those detective movies seem to have. :-) This is well worth watching.
