Review of Mulberry Street (2006) by Chris P — 21 Mar 2008
Now this is what I love: a zombie film that tries something new. I can safely say that zombie rat people is definitely a first, but the film succeeds on much more than that premise. The opening setup and introduction to our small band of characters is classic stuff.
This batch of lovable losers is one you can actually root for, and I was thoroughly pleased at how good the acting was by the entire cast. The directing is solid, and the low-budget (60 grand!?) never shows itself as a sore thumb thanks to some nifty visuals, great camera work, fantastic atmosphere, and above all wonderful writing and characterizations.
If you laugh in the movie it's because the characters say something funny, not because it's hokey. Mulberry Street rises above the pack because Jim Mickle and co-writer/star Nick Damici actually have something to say.
The film is frightening because there's more going on than just splashes of blood and gore. And for people who don't care about that stuff, there's also scary fuckin' rat people zombies.
