Review of Mulan (1998) by Andreas O — 01 Nov 2012
Probably the most interesting Disney feature film from the post-Lion King era, Mulan is renowned for breaking many of the studio traditions. With a female lead that's both proactive and well-written, the movie has a refreshing gender equality message.
And for those who say the fact that she has to dress up like a man to accomplish things works against the feminist tone - you have frickin' missed the point. Rather, the one big downer on that note may be the ending, where Mulan pretty much rejects the reward for her troubles in order to return home and be the good girl.
A topic for an interesting discussion. Even though Eddie Murphy's dragon can be annoying at times and the villain is actually pretty dull by Disney standards, Mulan stands as one of the studio's finest in modern times.
