Review of Mulan (1998) by Facebook U — 15 Mar 2015
Well, in the wake of my Madagascar 3 review, I've decided to review an animated movie I actually like. What I like most about this movie is how it doesn't rehash the same damsel in distress formula that had become Disney's trade mark at the time of its release.
It displays women as strong and independent, and I think that is what deprecates it from the pack. Now yes, Aladdin did do the strong female character think first with Jasmine (and very successfully I might add), but here they actually make her the main focus.
This change in formula really helps all the characters feel more like individuals rather than archetypes. The voice cast is stellar, especially Eddie Murphy as the dragon, who shows that he does have the ability to be funny without being raw.
The animation is gorgeous, and the themes of duty and honor really add emotional weight to the movie. Now since this is a Disney film, I can get past the fact all the characters speak English (especially since in the Mandarin dub there's no Eddie Murphy), and besides, the cast is like I said, stellar.
To be honest I think this maybe my favorite Disney film. I know go ahead and hate me because I didn't choose The Lion King. I'm sticking to my opinion.
