Review of Mud (2013) by Chris K — 16 Jan 2014
An interesting movie, if awkwardly paced.
McConaughey delivers a great performance, as always, and Ellis (played by Tye Sheridan) has a great storyline. Mud is about love and loss, truth and lies, the bonds that strengthen a family and the fragile ties that keep them together. It wants to be more philosophical at points, and others wants to be a thriller, But what plays out is a slice of life piece that says a lot, but could be said more concise. The finale is great; themes of sacrifice and love play out like poetry...if only the rest of the movie was as solid mud would've been something unique. But the middling approach to storytelling is slow and boring. An OK movie.
