Review of Mr. Turner (2014) by Ian C — 12 Feb 2015
J.W.T. Turner has always been my favourite English painter, Mike Leigh is one of my favourite film directors and Timothy Spall is one of the all time great English character actors so I went along to see "Mr Turner" in the hope that it would delight me despite being two and a half hours long and having no real story.
It did not disappoint. In fact it was a visual treat of cinematographic excellence that I have not seen since Stanley Kubrick's unappreciated masterpiece "Barry Linden" where every scene was like a walk through an art gallery.
This film is beautifully shot and takes you back to mid-19th century England as if by time-machine where the authenticity is just about flawless. It isn't for everyone and some may find it incredibly tedious and Turner himself an unsophisticated, animalistic self-centred wierdo but each to his own.
To me it was, like one of Turner's great artworks, an unsurpassed masterpiece.
