Review of Mr. Turner (2014) by Stephanie D — 24 Oct 2016
I hated this movie. Yes it was cinematographically amazing-with artistic shots reminiscent of Mr. Turner's paintings, yes the acting and costumes transported you to the time period so you had a very real feel of the historic sweep of the life of Mr.
Turner-but what the heck was going on in Mr. Turner's personal life? What is this bizarre sexual relationship with the maid, why does he ignore his wife and children, what are his emotional reactions to the various negative feedback about his paintings.
There is no story arc, there is no growth in the character, there is no resolution or climax. Perhaps if it is viewed as an art movie it is supposed to be excused from these requirements-but I found the movie terribly unfulfilling and ultimately disappointing and a terrible waste of time.
