Mother! is foremost an allegorical piece and that becomes increasingly overt as it progresses. The cost of a reinforced allegory is a story and characters which are at times overly simple. That said, the film develops tension excellently within a fascinating, surreal environment, often centering around evocation of isolation.
It also incorporates very powerful usage of sound and imagery. But it is the way in which the environmental allegory is presented, through religious metaphors, which truly elevates the film into something worthy of rumination and discourse.
