Italians have that long standing reputation of combining passion and a sense of emotional instability. Something that is very much glorified here in this purposefully dysfunctional rom-com about an uptight Italian widow from New York (Cher) who is caught in a nasty love triangle. Juggling the momma's boy best friend of her dead husband whom she agreed to marry in one hand, and sleeping with his bitter, one-handed baker of a little brother (Nic Cage) in the other, she has one spicy meatball of a problem. And the family that she should be able to depend on (by Italian standards) in this situation, are all suffering their own love woes while blaming it on something as culturally silly as the supernatural effects of a full moon. . . Whatever howling mad effect that full moon had on the characters of this film, it definitely had the same "blinding" effect on the audience. While a good majority of people seem to love this film and the performances, I simply could not get the charm from it all nor find the entertainment in the craziness the story was peddling. Moreover, I am shocked that such accolades of "superior acting" were awarded to performances that were meant to be overly hoaky, and didn't really show anybody acting any differently than they probably would in their everyday lives. "Moonstruck" it total, left me underwhelmed and with the same bad taste I would get after nipping into an overcooked eggplant parmesan.
