Review of Moonstruck (1987) by Mandela W — 23 Sep 2016
I've heard and seen a lot of romantic comedies over the years but the one I hear most frequently is Moonstruck. Legendary Singer Cher and Nicolas Cage star in this unique rom com set in the Italian American world in New York City. Cher stars as Loretta a woman who lost her husband many years ago in a bus accident. She is a woman of tradition and follows the ways of Italian americans when it comes to marriage. She half heartedly agrees to marry a man named Johnny after one date. As she prepares for the wedding she is asked to invite Johnny's brother Ronny whom Johnny has an estranged relationship with. Unexpectedly the brother falls for Loretta which leads to a hell of a lot of comedy involving crazy stupid love.
So I am gonna go straight to the acting here which hooked me instantly and cher was fantastic here! such a witty sharp comedic performance from one of america's finest entertainers. she is able to bounce off of veterans Olympia Dukakis and Nicolas cage. Nicholas cage gets the chance to get his Casanova on but in a rugged Italian fashion. He gives one of the most passionate and romantic performances of his career here. Olympia Dukakis plays rose the way it needs to be played as Loretta in the distant future. however the love is still there with her just as it needs to be with her daughter. Vincent gardenia also did an excellent job as cosmo here.
This script is phenomenally written. such a well thought out comedy. Marriage and starting a family is one of the many important aspects of the Italian culture. Norman Jewison emphasizes on this time and time again here while at the same time looking at love from outside this view. He directs all this with such precision and intelligence. The music is so funny and lighthearted but also beautiful too. It acts as another member of the cast telling this story as should any great film score. I loved the suddenness in all of the comedy everything is unpredictable here. the dialogue is both authentic and showcases the true meaning of amore in Italian culture. The film also supplies a real surprise ending.
One of the top 5 best comedies you will ever see and one of my new favorite films. it just so dang funny man go check it out when you can.
