Review of Moonraker (1979) by Jason C — 20 Apr 2008
By far the worst of the Bond franchise. Here, the Broccolli family rather shamelessly attempt to cash in on the late-70's science fiction boom by clinging onto the coattails of the 'Star Wars/Close Encounters of the Third Kind' phenomenon.
All this aside, 'Moonraker's' real problem is that it endevours to be all things to everybody and in attempting to do so is ultimately nothing to anyone. Part spy thriller, part science fiction caper, this film even has a rather bizarre homage to the traditional American Western mid-way through.
The end result is a rather messy affair that exposes the underlying complacency of everyone involved in the franchise at this point in time.
