Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Chris S — 29 Nov 2008
Tremendously powerful and thought provoking drama that makes for uncomfortable but rewarding viewing. Billy Bob Thornton has rarely been better in his portrayal of Hank, a man raised by a racist who embarks upon a relationship with a black woman after his views are called into question.
Halle Berry won an oscar for her role and though she's good, both Thornton and Heath Ledger outshine her.
The film is a gripping and compelling study of a man trying to come to terms with his views and a path of redemption for the life he has led which ultimately had brought him nothing but heartache.
