Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Tyler S — 27 May 2014
If you are looking for an uplifting movie this isn't the one for you. Different things going on here. Themes of loss, family relationships, and racism are all explored here. You have a cop and his mentally broken son, a death row inmate, a widow who loses her son, and a strange interracial relationship with connections that are very ironic.
The movie has phenomenal performances all around especially from Halle Berry who plays the role as a lost southern woman who is beyond grief stricken, yet finding a way to go on. Billy Bob Thorton is exceptional as her strange love interest and death row security guard.
What can't be overlooked is Ledgers performance; one of pain and suffering. It's a somber movie fueled by amazing performances and a sex scene for the ages.
