Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Sandy K — 30 Nov 2012
Beautifully drawn story of a new teacher and his students, and how they help each other with their grief at a terrible loss. Still reeling from the shock of their teacher's suicide, all the Montreal grade-school children know about their new teacher is that he is from Algeria; they don't realize he is seeking asylum, nor the terrible loss he has experienced.
It's a quiet story, told with respect for all the characters. At its heart it's about the need for human kindness and connection to get us through grief and move forward.
